Prince’s estate has released “With This Tear,” a previously unheard recording by the late icon. The latest dispatch from Prince’s famously expansive personal archive was released via his own NPG Records and Legacy Recordings yesterday, one day before the 10th anniversary of the artist’s passing at Paisley Park, his hallowed home and studio complex outside of Minneapolis.

“With This Tear” is an intimate piano ballad led by Prince’s tenor, which erupts into falsetto and breaks down to a whisper by the outro amid a wistful arrangement of chimes and synthesized strings. Prince recorded his version at Paisley Park in 1991 as a demo for Celine Deon, whose version of the song appears on her 1992 self-titled album; the vaulted song is newly mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated producer and engineer Chris James, who worked with Prince in the mid 2010s on Plectrumelectrum, Art Official Age, and 2015’s HITnRUN Phase Two, the last studio album he released in his lifetime.

In the decade since Prince’s tragic passing, his estate has honored his legacy with several archival releases, including massive deluxe reissues of Sign O’ The Times and 1999, the unreleased studio album Welcome 2 America, live tapes like Prince and The Revolution: Live (from 1985) and demo collections like Piano and a Microphone 1983 and Originals, the latter compiling songs that he’d originally written for other artists. The estate detailed that “With This Tear” is the first piece of another forthcoming album assembled from the vault he meticulously assembled from the very beginning of his career.

In June, Paisley Park will host Celebration 2026, the 10th anniversary presentation of the event that has annually observes his passing with an immersive tribute to his life and music. Some of the many friends and collaborators set to perform at this special staging include Chaka Khan, Morris Day, Miguel, Bilal, Tevin Campbell, Sounds of Blackness and an unprecedented collaboration between members of the New Power Generation and the Revolution, plus panelists like Bootsy Collins and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.
