Edie Brickell and Matt Chamberlain first recorded and toured together over 35 years ago, when Edie Brickell & New Bohemians released their second album, Ghost of a Dog. The two recently launched a new musical project that builds on an improvisational ethos. World Famous Pets is a quartet with Brickell on vocals, Chamberlain behind the kit, bassist Kaveh Rastegar (John Legend, Sting) and guitar player Mason Stoops (Jackson Brown, Mumford & Sons).
“Matt is one of those rare people in life whose connection to you never fades. Years go by, and it’s as if no time has passed, and you pick up where you left off,” Brickell says of Chamberlain. “As musicians, I’ve witnessed the evolution of his playing in awe of his talent and skill. His experiment to bring Kaveh and Mason to play in the studio with us for 6 days turned out to be a free-flowing fountain of song after song. They are all monster players who improvise in song form, changing tones and feel as we go along. We listen to each other and roll together like a river of music, not knowing what’s around the bend but tuned into the same current. We all felt it and just went with it, so fun, so astonishing and productive.”
World Famous Pets just shared a new song from their forthcoming self-titled debut, which will be released on September 25. This is the second tune the group has shared from the record, after “Maybe Somehow.” Brickell notes, “This song rolled right out of Mason Stoops’ guitar strum like a familiar stranger—a welcome newcomer we all loved at once.”
The band has also confirmed a series of tour dates which appear below the new track.
