Gov’t Mule is back on the road for a series of shows over the next few weeks that will culminate with an Orpheum Theater gig in New Orleans on May 1. On Saturday night the group traveled to Miramar Beach, FL for a performance at Joe Bonamassa’s Sound Wave Beach Weekend. Back in 2000, Bonnamassa recorded Gov’t Mule frontman’s “If Heartaches Were Nickels” for his debut record, A New Day Yesterday.
The Miramar Beach show found Gov’t Mule inviting some familiar faces to the stage. First up was Grace Potter, who appeared for a version of the Stevie Nicks classic “Gold Dust Woman.” She has performed the tune with the group on a few occasions over the years, most recently in 2024 at New Orleans’ Daze Between Festival (and the prior occasion was also in the Crescent City, at the Fairgrounds during Jazz Fest 2016).
Three songs later the event’s host took the stage for version of “I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home Tonight.” Ann Peebles originally recorded the tune, written by Al Jackson Jr. and Timothy Matthews, which has long been a staple for both the Mule and Bonamassa over the years. This appearance presages a series of summer dates by the Mule and Bonamassa, slated to kick off at Wolf Trap on July 29.
