On Tuesday, June 4, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi were sworn in as Honorary Deputies in Georgia’s Jones County Sheriff’s Office.

“Years ago a young 14 year old guitar player names Derek Trucks would often ride with our deputies after he finished playing his sets at the Georgia Rib Company,” Jones County Sheriff Butch Reece wrote via Facebook.

After years of friendship with the department, the Tedeschi Trucks Band co-founders now officially hold the titles of Col. Susan Tedeschi and Maj. Derek Trucks.

“Remember Derek she outranks you,” joked Sheriff Reece.

Today we were honored to have two very special people and their family visit us. Years ago a young 14 year old guitar player names Derek Trucks would often ride with our deputies after he finished playing his sets at the Georgia Rib Company. He came by and brought his family. His wife Susan Tedeschi Trucks, an accomplished musician in her own right and their children. Derek has never forgot where he came from nor the people who supported him. In simple words Derek and Susan are just good people. I personally know of some people who have had some life changing events occur in their lives and Derek and Susan have never wavered from their friendship with these individuals. Today it was my pleasure to swear in Susan and Derek as honorary Deputies. Congrats to Col. Susan Tedeschi Trucks and her subordinate Maj. Derek Trucks. Remember Derek she outranks you. Very ironic that in the 70’s, while I was a deputy and visited the Allman Brothers farm in Juliette, it never occurred to me how prominent they would become in the music industry. “Mama said you can’t judge a book by looking at the cover”

I guess Derek chose the right path when he chose the music industry instead of being a low paid Deputy Sheriff. Thanks so much for coming by to visit and your continued friendship. Rock on my pal and stay safe…
