Last night, the Cascadia chapter of Bob Dylan’s current tour picked up at McMenamins’ Edgefield in Troutdale, Ore. After seemingly finding a setlist sweet spot during his early spring appearances, sticking to the same positioning of tunes night after night, the musician drew outside the lines during his Thursday show, which was located outside the perimeter of Portland, Ore., by introducing a new song into his live repertoire: Basement Tapes deepcut “Baby, Won’t You Be My Baby.”
Dylan began the show in a similar fashion to previous gigs via a “To Be Alone with You” entrance. Rather than go with the expected [“Man in a Long Black Coat”] the band picked up “I Can Tell,” and ultimately flooded the set with a new gush of placements: “Forgetful Heart,” “Axe and the Wind,” “When I Paint My Masterpiece,” “Early Roman Kings,” “Under the Red Sky,” “I’ll Make It All Up To You,” and “All Along the Watchtower.”
In time, the band produced renditions of “I Contain Multitudes,” “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35,” and “Share Your Love With Me,” ahead of the concert debut. The special live moment arrived in the form of The Bootleg Series, Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes RAW (2014) cut, “Baby, Won’t You Be My Baby.” Its arrival marked one of the musician’s longest stretches between releasing a song as a studio recording and performing it live.
The first-time move was followed by a final selection of songs that included “Soon After Midnight,” “Man in the Long Black Coat,” and the show-ending “Crossing the Rubicon.” Having completed last night’s concert, Dylan will take a night away from the stage in anticipation of his two-night stand at Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville, Wash. Tickets remain on sale.
