On Wednesday, May 8, “Little Steven” Van Zandt performed a gig at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, NJ, and surprised fans with a sit-in by The Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen.

“I’ve got an old friend around here somewhere,” Van Zandt said to the crowd before welcoming Springsteen to the stage, before launching into the Born To Run classic “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out.”

As many music fans know, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (which has officially featured Van Zandt since 1975) got their start by gigging around New Jersey, specifically Asbury Park. The city is so important to the band’s history that Springsteen named his first LPGreetings from Asbury Park.

And while The Boss didn’t bring his guitar onstage, the energy of May 8’s surprise “Tenth Avenue Freeze Out” is infectious, with the two old friends sharing a microphone and belting out the lyrics arm-in-arm.
