Last night, May 15, The Rolling Stones took their Hackney Diamonds tour to Seattle’s Lumen Field. Before the headliners arrived, blues guitar master Joe Bonamassa commenced the stadium appearance, performing a sampling of his own material, as well as a cover of Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Twenty-Four Hour Blues.” After shifting the stage equipment, a proper introduction alerted fans it was time for Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and their acclaimed backing band to kick things off. A high point of the show was fan-voted “Wild Horses,” which represented a tour debut and a bust out, last performed on July 27, 2022.
Strutting the catwalk and making the most on stage, Jagger proceeded with an oldie, 1965’s “Get Off of My Cloud,” before igniting the first notes of “Let’s Spend the Night Together,” which was helmed to Chuck Leavell’s premiere key work. A special moment came when Jagger picked up the guitar next and added riffs for the first minute or so of a newer number, “Angry” from the Hackney Diamond collection. Returning to classics, the band reminded their Emerald City audience, “It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It).”
A high point arrived next, with the fan-voted song reveal. Like a slot machine, options populated across the screen, including “She’s A Rainbow,” “Far Away Eyes,” and others that inevitably did not receive playtime. Instead, the people voted for “Wild Horses,” which saw the band blow the dust off their Gram Parsons’ co-write, last performed during European tour dates in 2022. The new song, “Whole Wide World,” landed before “Tumbling Dice” and an ensuing “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”
“You Got The Silver” came before “Little T&A” and, as a night highlight, fan favorite “Sympathy for the Devil.” “Miss You” saw Jagger pick up the guitar again and represented a continuation of hits, “Gimme Shelter,” “Paint It Black,” and a frame ending “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” Crowd praise brought the band back for their encore, “Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” and a jaw-dropping “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” All said and done, the night was a reminder of the multigenerational power of music and its unique ability to unite folks.
