Chicago’s inaugural North Coast Music Festival took place over Labor Day Weekend. The three-day event mixed performers associated with the jamband genre like Umphrey’s McGee, the Disco Biscuits, Grace Potter, New Mastersounds, the New Deal and Pretty Lights with sets from mainstream rap and electronic acts such as Nas & Damian Marley, the Chemical Brothers, Paul Van Dyk, Moby and De La Soul.

Both the Disco Biscuits and Umphrey’s McGee showcased some unique covers and special guests during their sets. The Disco Biscuits performed Gorillaz’s “Feel Good Inc.”—a cover the band introduced earlier this year—and invited out Umphrey’s McGee guitarist Brendan Bayliss for “Home Again.” Meanwhile, Umphrey’s McGee collaborated with rapper Kidd A on a jam leading out of “Booth Love” and covered Cee Lo’s current YouTube sensation, “Fuck You.” The group, who is likely the first nationally touring rock band to perform the viral sensation, has covered modern acts like Chromeo and Phoenix, as well as current SNL parodies, in recent years.

Perhaps the weekend’s most unique offering was a late night jam session hosted by Umphrey’s McGee guitarist Brendan Bayliss and keyboardist Joel Cummins at Chicago’s Bottom Lounge. Billed Bayliss and Cummins “perform the music of Umphrey’s McGee,” the musicians offered new arrangements of UM songs like “In the Kitchen,” “Red Baron,” “August” and “Mamu,” as well as Wilco’s “Jesus, Etc.” snd Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” among others. A number of guests joined the musicians throughout the night, including UM percussionist Andy Farag, Wyllys, Jennifer Hartswick and the other members of Van Ghost (Wyllys and Van Ghost opened the night). Original UM drummer Mike Mirro also took the stage for a few songs, including the Cummins/Mirro composition “Kimble.” Mirro co-founded UM with Bayliss, Cummins and bassist Ryan Stasik but left to pursue a medical degree.
