The answer to the titular question, But Who’s Gonna Play the Melody? is Christian McBride and Edgar Meyer.
Rhythm is, to be sure, the bedrock of McBride and Meyer’s instrumental, double-double bass LP. But with bowing, plucking and each player occasionally switching to piano, as on “Interlude #1,” “Interlude #2” and Rodgers and Hart’s “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” and others, melody, too, abounds.
With 15 tracks spanning 65 minutes, Melody? often swings, particularly on such low-end duets
as “Green Slime,” “Barnyard Disturbance” and Bill Monroe’s “Tennessee Blues,” as the duo touch on jazz, funk and classical stylings.
The result is an LP, while made primarily for bass players and/or aficionados, that lands with broader appeal.
