On Friday, April 4, Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio took his current Solo Acoustic Tour to the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C. During the single set output, the seated musician treated his audience to an acoustic first, giving the Round Room cut, “Walls of the Cave,” a stripped-down treatment. Also serving as a concert highlight was a bust out of the Ghost of the Forest feature “In Long Lines.”
Before the onset of Friday night’s most spoken-about moments, Anastasio warmed up with a series of songs that included Phish’s “More,” Lonely Trips inclusion “Lost in the Pack,” the classic TAB debuted “What’s Going Through Your Mind,” and what served as the first semblance of Ghost of the Forest, on “If Again.” Before pulling the trigger on the night’s acoustic debut, Anastasio culled Phish material and the final nod to his 2020 solo LP via “Evolve.”
Breaking from the classic key-laden opening, Anastasio excelled in producing the start of “Walls of the Cave.” As the song initially unfolded, the acoustic nature of its delivery required a moment of contemplation from the audience, who quickly picked up on what was developing. The display was met with hoots and hollers before the one-minute mark.
Anastasio mimicked the original percussion build, tapping his guitar to create rhythm. The audience picked up on this, clapping along as he sang: “Listen to/ The silent trees/ But still your words float on the breeze/ Look away/ I see them all.” The re-emergence of strums delineated the brief and special moment as a one-off.
Later, Anastasio and pianist Jeff Tanski performed “In Long Lines.” According to phish.net, the guitarist last played the selected number at the Beacon Theatre on November 6, 2020, effectively ending a four-year gap.
Note: Anastasio followed up from his time in Washington, D.C., with two back-to-back nights of music at the Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre in Red Bank, N.J. More details to come.
