Spafford used both crafty covers and high-velocity jamming to say goodbye to 2020 at their crowdless, three-set Marquee Theatre gig on Dec. 31.

The band welcomed their virtual audience with Lionel Richie’s ’80s hit “All Night Long (All Night)” before sinking into their own material with a rocking “Lovesick Melody”> “Soil” jam.

Later in set one, fans online praised the group’s interplay in a standout “Red’s Jam,” with many noting how seamless the band was onstage, despite the pandemic-induced touring drought.

Set two was bookended by “Fuel” and “Settled In,” but the New Year’s Eve holiday had many viewers eagerly awaiting the band’s countdown to 2021.

The moment arrived late in set three, with the band launching into fan favorite “Electric Taco Stand,” complete with an alternate ending that bled into the classic “Auld Lang Syne” before pivoting back into the high-energy tune to end the evening.

Spafford still had a few tricks up their sleeves for their NYE encore, nodding to the never-ending barrage of bad news in 2020 with the live debut of Counting Crows’ “A Long December,” before hitting the gas once more with their rocking original “Dirtbath.”
