After playing to a raucous Wednesday night crowd, Neil Young returned to The Capitol Theatre with just as much energy on Thursday to showcase not only himself, but the prowess of his new favorite backing band Promise of the Real.

The band pleased fans immediately by opening their single-set show with Harvest‘s “Out on the Weekend.” Young then led POTR for their first-ever version of mid-’70s deep cut “Albuquerque,” a tune Young himself hasn’t played in nearly a decade. “Albuquerque” was followed by another POTR debut, “Speakin’ Out.”

Later, Young offered his first repeat of his two-night run, “Field of Opportunity,” followed by “I’ve Been Waiting for You,” “Love to Burn” and “Love and Only Love.” Fan favorite “Heart of Gold” turned into a venue-wide sing-a-long, and and while most of the evening was comprised of Young originals, the rocker gave POTR frontman Lukas Nelson the spotlight on “Turn Off the News,” a Promise of the Real original. Afterwards, Lukas’ brother Micah Nelson jumped onstage to serve up one of his own Particle Kid tunes “Everything is Bullshit.”

Young took the mic back for a versions of “Powderfinger,” “Children of Destiny,” and the CSNY protest anthem “Ohio.”

A political fervor hung in the air as Young played his final tune “Rockin’ in the Free World,” and encored with the ’90s era, Ragged Glory number “Mansion on the Hill.”
