Sturgill Simpson, performing under his alias Johnny Blue Skies, is currently in the midst of the Mutiny For The Masses arena tour with his combo The Dark Clouds. On Saturday, October 10, Sturgill and his group—which includes guitarist Laur Joamets, bassist Kevin Black, drummer Miles Miller and Robbie Crowell on keyboards and saxophone—appeared at Detroit, MI’s Little Caesars Arena and surprised fans by performing Simpson’s heavily psychedelic 2019 set Sound & Fury in its entirety at the start of the night and then dropping this year’s Mutiny After Midnight, which was issued under the Johnny Blue Skies & the Dark Clouds banner, in full.
As Jambase reports, the decision to perform two complete LPs stems from a Reddit thread. Their newswire explains, “On Wednesday evening, Redditor Far-Feedback-6437 shared on the r/sturgillsimpson subreddit a post entitled ‘Detroit show manifestation’ in advance of Sturgill Simpson’s Johnny Blue Skies & The Dark Clouds concert at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday, which included the below request [sic]: Detroit show on Saturday Stu plays sound and fury in its entirety flowed by the full mutiny after midnight album.”
Though the show marked the first time Simpson had run through the records in full, most songs from the sets have been in heavy rotation this year, though some selections have seen more stage time than others. In fact, the only tune from the two LPs Simpson had not performed already in 2026 was the Sound & Fury selection “Remember to Breathe,” which he last played on May 16, 2025. (Much of Sound & Fury was recorded at McGuire Motor Inn in Waterford, MI, as Simpson mentioned from the stage.) Winking to his Reddit request, Simpson also included the Mutiny After Midnight digital exclusive cover of Eddie Murphy’s “Party All The Time” and the bonus-track take on Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade Of Pale” during his set. Also of note, Joamets was unable to play pedal-steel guitar during the show after injuring his leg to the point where he was wearing a cast.
After offering up the two albums, the ensemble returned for an encore that consisted of “Life of Sin,” “Turtles All the Way Down,” and Moore & Napier’s “Long White Line” all of which appear on Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, as well as a version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Machine Gun” that was sandwiched between the A Sailor’s Guide to Earth song “Call to Arms.”
Up next, Simpson will appear at Philadelphia’s Xfinity Mobile Arena tomorrow.
