My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James returned to Lockn’ Festival after headlining next to Phish at the 2016 event. This time, James returned solo playing a set early in the day that included a guest appearance from Brandi Carlile on “Wonderful (The Way I Feel)” and Joe Russo for the Plastic Ono Band anthem “Give Peace a Chance.”

James returned the favor to Carlile during her set later in the afternoon by joining in on John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery,” a song Carlile said was written by one of their personal heroes. Bob Weir was also among those watching the collaboration from the side of the stage.

The My Morning Jacket frontman wasn’t quite done, as he found his way to the Relix Stage late at night to sit in with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead on a surprise cover of Jane’s Addiction’s “Been Caught Stealing” and the Dead’s “Brown-Eyed Women.” Almost Dead brought James back in the encore, along with Nicole Atkins who led the band on “Little Red Rooster” and “Cassidy” earlier in the show, for a stirring “Brokedown Palace” closer.

Almost Dead will return to Lockn’ tonight for another late night set.
