Bob Dylan’s artistic drive ceases to waver. During his latest tour stop at the open-air Cuthbert Amphitheater in Eugene, Ore., the 85-year-old maven of song shuffled his setlist some, moving “Watching the River Flow” to slot one before locking into a familiar run of material that cleared a path for “I Shall Be Released.” The late ’60s masterpiece took the set’s final position and marked a monumental milestone, having been shelved since June 7, 2008. Its arrival ended an 18-year pause and underscored Dylan’s current affinity for crafting a lasting concert impression.
Previously, during Dylan’s Long Hot Summer Tour opener on June 4 at McMenamins’ Edgefield, located outside Portland, Ore., the musician placed “Baby, Won’t You Be My Baby” 13 moves into the frame. Its entry marked a debut, the first time the beloved artist had performed the track off The Bootleg Series, Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes RAW (2014) live.
With seemingly careful consideration, Dylan rearranged the contents of his June 6 set [night one of two] at Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville, Wash. His arrival on stage was defined by “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere,” performed for the first time since November 21, 2012. Dylan’s current pick of revived songs reflects his most loved and defining material, tracks deeply associated with his sui generis songbook by generations of listeners.
Dylan is no stranger to making setlist adjustments and periodically breaking the monotony of his live performances. Despite his latest bank of on-stage statements, delivered as callbacks to a bygone era, the musician is known to stick to a stagnant stack of material from time to time, albeit his latest phase breaks the pattern and creates room for greater ingenuity.
Following his latest live appearance, Dylan will lead his tour to The Venue at Thunder Valley in Lincoln, Calif., where he will play on Friday, June 12. Tickets remain on sale.
