As we’ve reported, Pearl Jam closed out this year’s Ohana Festival on Sunday with a special guest. Billy Strings joined the group for the band’s performance at the event at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, CA.

When Strings came out with his acoustic guitar, Eddie Vedder introduced him by telling the crowd that Strings has won his fourth grade talent show by performing the tune they then played, “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town.” Vedder also offered a sweet acknowledgment of Strings’ late mother, noting that she had introduced the music of Pearl Jam to him.

Strings then remained on stage for a cover of Neil Young’s “Throw Your Hatred Down” from Mirror Ball, the 1995 album on which Young was backed by Pearl Jam. Later on, Strings returned for the encore with an electric guitar for a version of Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.”
