On Thursday evening, Jeff Tweedy submitted his second night of songs from San Francisco’s famed Fillmore stage. Night two found the musician, who is currently on tour in support of his new triple album, Twilight Override, busting out the Grateful Dead’s beloved folk ballad “Ripple.” According to setlist.FM, last night’s placement represented the first time since 2011 that Tweedy, the solo artist, had revived the Dead’s pertinent sendoff, despite appearing on two setlists for private events in 2020.
Last night’s reprise of the Grateful Dead standard continued Tweedy’s existing trend of delivering one or two cover songs with specific ties to the city. The current pattern accounts for a lift in bust-outs and debuts – as was the case during his most recent appearances. In addition to covering the San Francisco counterculture ambassadors, Tweedy and his band of family and friends also debuted The Doobie Brothers’ “What a Fool Believes,” a nod to nearby San Jose.
The night prior, during Tweedy’s initial concert at the Fillmore, he placed a first-time cover of Sly & The Family Stone’s “Everyday People” as the follow-up to a well-worn original “Family Ghost.” After sending a message of tolerance and groove-led acceptance, Tweedy and his inner circle delivered a song in honor of another Bay Area stable, El Cerrito’s Creedence Clearwater Revival’s actionable “Effigy.”
Tweedy’s regard for the Grateful Dead has been well known over the years. Most notably, he and his Wilco cast joined Phil Lesh during the Sacred Rose gathering in Chicago, circa 2022. During that specific show, the ensemble also positioned “Ripple” as a send-off, with Tweedy leading the heartfelt lines. Regarding the musician’s family band, during the height of the quarantine-timestamped Tweedy Show, the guitarist and his sons covered “Ripple.”
The musician also joined forces with Bobby Weir during 2013’s Americanarama Tour, covering “St. Stephen” on occasion. In addition, “U.S. Blues” has been picked up by Tweedy’s band, Wilco, appearing in setlists, specifically during the summer months.
