The funk-soul horn outfit Huntertones will release their new album, Transmission on August 21. The set was recorded live in a single room, without overdubs or isolation. “This is human music, certified organic,” saxophonist Dan White, who is known for his work with Cory Wong and Lake Street Dive, said in a statement. “We’re true believers in direct communication,” added Jon Lampley, longtime trumpeter for The Great Big Joy Machine (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert band). “We’re doing the thing that will only sound like us.”
Huntertones describe themselves as part of an extended family that includes Lake Street Dive, Cory Wong, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, O.A.R, Charlie Hunter and Kurt Elling. In 2014, White, Lampley, and trombonist Chris Ott founded the group at The Ohio State University and—with guitarist Joshua Hill, bassist Adam DeAscentis and drummer John Hubbell—found fame as an instrumental band in Columbus, before relocating to New York City.
“You have to see them; they’re incredible. Extremely inspiring, elevated musicians,” Rachael Price of Lake Street Dive, who guests on a cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “Thank You,” offered.
Elsewhere on the album, Kurt Elling and keyboardist Justin Stanton of Snarky Puppy contribute to a take on Jimmy Webb’s “Wichita Lineman.”
“A theme that is played with a lot on this album is using polar opposites to pull more out of the music and each other,” White said while announcing the release. “Rough and smooth textures, loud and soft, short and long, tension and release.”
In advance of Transmission, the group has also released a video for the tune “Melodian,” which can be found below. The group has a handful of shows on the books this summer between other commitments and will tour more extensively this fall.
