Devon Allman has had a busy 24 hours. The Southern rock torchbearer unveiled the dates and locations for his imminent 20 Years Strong Tour, which is intended to mark two decades since the release of his first album, the Honeytribe’s Torch. During the impending run, the bandleader will walk his six-piece band through material from each era of his career, promising “one song off every single album.” In addition to the forthcoming tour, Allman took the stage last night and put to use Jimi Hendrix’s 1968 Fender Stratocaster for a sold-out Tokyo audience.
According to Allman’s latest dispatch of live dates, the 20 Years Strong Tour is slated to begin on August 13 at Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club in Portsmouth, N.H. The Devon Allman Project will proceed with Northeastern gigs in Homer, N.Y. on August 14, and Lake Placid, N.Y. on August 15. The group will take their talents to the interior of the country, Bayfield, Wis. on August 20, and Wausau, Wis. on August 22.
The next night will find the ensemble playing on the Dakota Jazz Club stage in Minneapolis, ahead of follow-ups on August 28 in Milwaukee, Wis., and August 29 at the Southern Indiana Blues Festival. Writing about the intent behind the concert series, Allman penned, “The set will be filled with material from every era of my career, including my 4 solo albums, Honeytribe, Royal Southern Brotherhood, Allman Betts Band, Devon & Donovan Frankenreiter, Blues Summit and some family music as well.”
Following the tour news, Allman proceeded by taking the stage at Billboard Live Tokyo and delivering a sold-out concert. There, he was bestowed the opportunity to try out a famous instrument, Hendrix’s own 1968 Fender Stratocaster, famously used during the tripster’s August 18, 1969 Woodstock appearance. Notably, the historic axe currently belongs to Doggies Guitar, known for its rare selection of vintage and significant guitars and basses.
Tickets for the newly announced tour go on sale Friday. On the road, Allman will welcome support from GA-20.
