The Warren Haynes Band arrived in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. on Wednesday for another stop on the second leg of the Winter of Warren Tour. Haynes set the bar high by beginning the year with nightly eye-popping surprises on his solo run, and the celebrated Southern rock touchbearer has kept to that standard in the less flexible but more powerful full-band format, following an electrifying kickoff from Suwannee Amp Jam #2 to more jam-packed engagements up the East Coast. Last night’s show brought plenty of well-loved originals and a few unexpected covers, including a live debut.
Haynes and his road-hardened band of Terence Higgins, Kevin Scott, Matt Slocum and Greg Osby stepped into the spotlight on Wednesday with a red-hot rendition of Haynes’ Tales of Ordinary Madness standout “Fire in the Kitchen.” More signature selections like “Tear Me Down,” “River’s Gonna Rise” and “Sick of My Shadow” paved the way to the Haynes-penned late era Allman Brothers Band hits “Desdemona” and “Instrumental Illness.” After returning to Tales of Ordinary Madness for “I’ll Be te Onw,’ staged for the first time since November 2011, the group strode boldly into the set break with the frenetic licks of “Man in Motion.”
The Warren Haynes Band commenced their second set with the bandleader’s Million Voices Whisper entry “Till the Sun Comes Shining Through,” then switched gears for some moody psychedelia on a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Spanish Castle Magic.” After Gov’t Mule’s “Banks of the Deep End,” “These Changes” and the year’s first performance of Little Milton’s “That’s What Love Will Make You Do,” the quintet set into their first ever take on Jeff Beck’s classic “Freeway Jam,” drawn from 1975’s Blow by Blow. “This Life as We Know It” and “Invisible” capped off the second set, then the band returned for the reliable encore of “Soulshine.”
Warren Haynes will return to the stage tonight to take part in the 10th Annual Love Rocks NYC benefit concert at Manhattan’s Beacon Theatre. Find tickets and his full live itinerary at warrenhaynes.net
