On Monday, March 10, CBS and its streaming subsidiary Paramount+ will celebrate Ringo Starr’s music and legacy by running the former Beatles’ two-hour concert special capturing his performances at The Ryman in Nashville in January.
The event leaned into the musician’s latest country phase, evoked via the Look Up album and the subsequent January 10 release of the T Bone Burnett-produced and co-written set which included sonic compliments and featured assistance from guests Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Lucius, Larkin Poe, and Alison Krauss, who, along with others, helped out during The Ryman stagings.
Ringo’s Ryman concerts also included added help from Jack White during a cover of Carl Perkins’ “Matchbox,” and Sheryl Crow, who performed alongside the bandleader and fellow talents Mickey Guyton and Tuttle on “It Don’t Come Easy,” featured in the trailer. Tapping into the lead’s latest studio output, he invited Larkin Poe on “Thankful.”
Beyond new material, the Ryman concerts showcased Ringo’s roots, with The Beatles’ “Octopus’s Garden,” “I Don’t Want to Spoil The Party,” “I Wanna Be Your Man,” “What Goes On,” “Yellow Submarine,” and, of course, a supersized send-off, with all guests assisting on “With a Little Help From My Friends.”
During the Jan. 14 staging, Emmylou Harris surprised Ringo onstage, asking the multi-Grammy award-winning artist if he would like to make his Grand Old Opry debut in February. This added another layer of lore to the shows, which has now become a TV special.
