New York-based trio Octave Cat–comprised of Eli Winderman (Dopapod), Jesse Miller (Lotus), and Charlie Patierno–are gearing up to release their highly anticipated third studio album, Sprezzatura, on July 28. The band will also embark on a series of six shows in support of the album’s release.
The journey to create Sprezzatura was a long and dedicated one for the trio. Miller, the band’s bassist, revealed in a statement that they began writing music for the album back in 2019. Over the course of multiple recording sessions at different studios, amidst their commitments to other bands, Octave Cat managed to amass enough material for two albums. The result is an eclectic mix of tracks that truly represent the diverse musical influences within the band.
Sprezzatura aims to embody the concept of doing something difficult seemingly with ease. Miller explains, “We use jazz harmonies, swing, and other rhythmic ideas in the context of dance music. Every track should be catchy enough that the melodies get stuck in your ear, but with composition and production elements that form a layered construction.”
Two singles from the album, “Talk to Me” and “Vader,” are already available for streaming. The former combines elements of a Zapp & Roger’s beat with a Headhunters-style jam, creating a deep and irresistible groove. Winderman, the band’s keyboardist, recalled the origin of the track, stating, “I’ll always remember Charlie and I at the airport waiting for a flight and playing notes via his Macbook into the original demo session. Over time we shaped the melodies and bass line until we finally found the right combination—a groove that produced uncontrollable stank face.” “Vader” draws inspiration from early 2000s dance rock, featuring a heavy disco beat, distorted clavinet, and a captivating Moog solo.
Following their album release, Octave Cat will hit the road for a series of shows, showcasing their new material and enthralling audiences with their dynamic performances. The tour kicks off on July 1-2 at the High Sierra festival in Quincy, Calif., and continues with dates in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Bridgeport.
Vinyl pre-orders for Sprezzatura are now available on Bandcamp, while the album can be streamed on Spotify and Apple Music.
