Today, the eclectic American multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter David Bromberg announced his final show with his Big Band will take place at New York’s Beacon Theatre on June 10. The 77-year-old–known for his mastery of bluegrass, blues, folk, jazz, country and western, and rock-and-roll–recognizes that the attrition from touring has taken its toll and is ready for one last union to celebrate his jubilant and illustrious career.
On “New Lee Highway Blues,” Bromberg sums up his feelings: “You know that Goddamn road seemed like it went forever/ Exhaust fumes made our eyes turn red and swell/ With our clothes stuck to the seat and to our bodies/ It was a stinking summer trip through southern hell.” Despite the discomfort, the musician known for his humorous lyrics has created many friendships over his 50-plus years of performing and recording and will be joined by old friends during his performance in New York, including Jeff Tweedy.
“It’ll be a party with my bandmates and friends; a real treat to have everyone together,” said Bromberg in a statement. “I’m happy and proud to come full circle and play this last show in New York City where it all started so many years ago.”
For his final show, the Big Band will feature players that appeared on his latest LP 2019 Big Road including Nate Grower (fiddle, mandolin, guitar, vocals), Mark Cosgrove (guitar, mandolin, vocals), Josh Kanusky (drums, vocals), Suavek Zaniesienko (bass, vocals), Nancy Josephson (vocals), Kathleen Weber (vocals), Harvey Tibbs (trombone), Matt Koza (tenor sax, clarinet), Gordon Au (trumpet) and Dan Walker (keyboards, accordion).
