Last night, Dave Matthews played the second evening of their two-night stint at the Daily’s Place Amphitheater in Jacksonville, Fla. The evening saw an array of beloved Dave Matthews Band songs, along with the front man’s solo work, covers and an appearance from rock and roll royalty and power couple– Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks.

Dave Matthews Band opened up with 1999’s “One Sweet World” and didn’t wait to break out the hits; they followed with “Satellite” and “#41.” Next, the band–comprised of Dave Matthews, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard, Tim Reynolds, Rashawn Ross and Buddy Strong–moved through “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin),” “Madman’s Eyes,” “Do You Remember” and “Seek Up.” After playing 2021’s “The Only Thing” Dave Matthews Band performed their first cover of the evening, Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer.”

The single set show continued with “Two Step” and Matthews’ song “Stay or Leave.” Next came “You and Me” off of Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King and 2009’s “Funny the Way It Is.” The ensemble continued to dance seamlessly through their discography with “Break for It” and “Can’t Stop” before they arrived at “Minarets” for which Matthews scatted the intro. For the final song before the prestigious special guests, the ensemble played “Crush.”

After what could’ve been a set-closing performance of “Crush” Trucks walked on stage bathed in blue light and was greeted with rousing applause. After the recognition of Trucks settled, four spotlights shined on Mathews as he played the intro for “Lie in Our Graves.” Trucks played along quietly as the song began to build and Mathews and the crowd began to harmonize. After nearly three minutes Matthews paused and made space for Trucks to do what he was born to do. Trucks continued to shred and make grinding fretboard fireworks for nearly seven minutes straight before Dave Matthews Band reunited with him for the song’s silk-lined outro.

After the “Lie in Our Graves,” Matthews immediately welcomed Tedeschi onstage. Following a stretched-out intro, Tedeschi’s iconic soulful vocals ushered in the Bob Dylan penned lyrics of “All Along The Watchtower.” Tedeschi traded off vocal runs with Matthews continuously raising the heat in the building. The crowd was sweating when like a high-powered fan in the height of summer Trucks ripped into the unmistakable guitar solo found on Jimi Hendrix’s interpretation of the seminal song. The three of them formed a trifecta of musical excellence carrying the set to its close.

Dave Matthews Band returned to the stage a bit later for a two-song encore of Tex Ritter’s “Rye Whiskey” and the final song of the evening “Ants Marching.”

Today marks Truck’s 43rd birthday and a happy birthday to him.
