Just one week ahead of his headling set at Coachella, Kanye West has reportedly pulled out from the event entirely. The news was first reported by TMZ and later confirmed by Billboard. West and Coachella have yet to make public announcements.
Earlier this year, West threatened to drop out of the festival after perceiving that fellow headliner Billie Ellish “dissed” Travis Scott. Ellish said, “I wait for the people to be OK before I keep going,” when footage of her stopping a show when a distressed fan in her crowd needed an inhaler surfaced, and West felt it was a response to the tragic Astroworld Festival crowd crush.
He wrote on a since-deleted Instagram post which was shared on Feb. 10, “Come on Billie we love you,” in all-caps, he continued. “Please apologize to Trav and to the families of the people who lost their lives. No one intended this to happen. Trav didn’t have any idea of what was happening when he was on stage and was very hurt by what happened, and yes Trav will be with me at Coachella but now I need Billie to apologize before I perform.”
Eilish responded to West in the comments of his post writing, “Literally never said a thing about Travis. Was just helping a fan.”
As one may infer, Scott along with West will not also be performing at Coachella.
More recently a Change.org petition called for West’s removal from the lineup due to his recent public statements towards his ex-wife Kim Kardashian and her boyfriend comedian Pete Davidson. The petition which has nearly 50,000 signatures reads: “We have watched Kanye harass, manipulate, and hurt Kim, Pete, and others for over a year now. No one seems to want to stand up to him, and the ones that do, he puts under fire as well. Most recently, he has been threatening actual bodily harm on others. This is ridiculous that he is allowed to freely do this. Coachella (along with other brand names that are still working with him) should be ashamed of themselves and should not be giving him any more of a platform.”
Coachella is set to take place on the weekends of April 15-17 and April 22-24.
