On Wednesday night, John Mayer continued his Sob Rock Tour, performing at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., without his touring drummer Steve Ferrone. The latter tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week. Instead, the guitar virtuoso was joined by his former drummer and Tedeschi Trucks Band member, J.J. Johnson.

The show kicked off with a Continuum pairing of “Belief” and “I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You).” Next, the band delivered an exhilarating “Who Says” performance off 2009’s Battle Studies. Then, Mayer returned to his third studio album with a knock-out rendition of “Stop This Train.”

The band settled into a six-song acoustic set next, which began with three tracks off 2021’s Sob Rock, including “Last Train Home,” “Shot in the Dark,” which featured a snippet of The Blue Nile’s “Tinseltown” followed by “New Light.” 

The band broke into “The Age of Worry” off 2012’s Born and Raised next, followed by a return to electric with “Wild Blue.” The new track, “Til the Right One Comes,” was played next, accompanied by a snippet of Paul Simons’ “You Can Call Me Al.” 

An acoustic solo set performed by Mayer began with “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” which segued into “Neon” off his debut LP, Room For Squares, and a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Falling” followed by “In Your Atmosphere” to conclude the solo session. 

The whole band then returned to the stage for a Room For Squares paring of “No Such Thing” and “Why Georgia,” followed by “Vultures” and a cover of Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones” sung by Mayer’s tour guitarist and vocalist, David Ryan Harris. 

For the final song of the set, Mayer once more returned to Continuum, performing the ballad “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room.” For their encore, the band closed out the evening with “Gravity.” 

The tour continues tomorrow night in Pittsburgh, Pa., where John Mayer and friends perform at PPG Paints Arena. Tickets are still available and can be purchased here.
