The String Cheese Incident closed their three-night Red Rocks run on Sunday night, with a memorable sit-in by bluegrass icon Del McCoury and his namesake band as well as some Irish step dancers for local flair.

For the first set, SCI started funky, with a “One Step Closer” jam, followed by “Get Tight.” A take on newer cut “Manga” saw multi-instrumentalist Michael Kang busting out his fiddle for the first time in the evening, and the music eventually found its way into Talking Heads favorite “Naive Melody.”

The band promised to “do some pickin'” as they welcomed the Del McCoury Band to the stage. The crowd responded by singing the legendary musician “Happy Birthday” (McCoury – whose birthday is on February 1 – has been celebrating his 80th year with celebratory shows across the U.S.)

“We’re trading licks up here,” McCoury said before the collective offered memorable versions of “High on the Mountain Top,” “Lonesome Fiddle Blues” and “My Walking Shoes” to close the set.

As storm clouds rolled through, SCI’s second half embraced the weather as local Irish step-dancing troupe Celtic Steps amplified a rainy version of “Rivertrance”

A “Looking Glass”> “Falling Through The Cracks” segment followed with rain pouring down and lightning on the horizon. “You still with us out there!?” Hollingsworth yelled midway through, amidst the rain.

The party continued with a pairing of “Joyful Sound”> “Outside And Inside,” and Kang offering a soaring solo for the former.

“We’ve had a blast for you here in Colorado. Let’s do this!” Kang exclaimed before they closed the second half with “Hi Ho No Show” and encored with “Shaking The Tree.”
