The Who played to a huge crowd at London’s Wembley Stadium on Saturday, and the iconic UK rockers marked the occasion with a sit in from Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, one of last night’s supporting acts, plus songs from their upcoming studio album.
The first portion of the evening paired The Who with an orchestra, as they ran through classics like “Pinball Wizard” and “Who Are You” before debuting “Hero Ground Zero,” which will appear on the as-yet-unnamed album. The band then moved into a middle section of the performance sans orchestra, including an acoustic duo rendition of “Won’t Get Fooled Again” from Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, plus a “Behind Blue Eyes” with strings. Finally, The Who regrouped with the orchestra to round out the night with a selection of tunes that included “Still Waiting for the Big Cigar,” another debut from the new record. A few songs later, Vedder emerged to help Daltrey out with the vocals on “The Punk and the Godfather.” The performance later wrapped up with a finale of “Baba O’Riley.”
Vedder’s opening set also included some surprise appearances, as the Pearl Jam frontman welcomed out both singer-songwriter Glen Hansard—for “Society,” “Black” and a cover of Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”—as well as Simon Townshend, brother of Pete, for Simon’s own “I’m the Answer.”
Check out both setlists below, along with fan-shot video of some of the night’s collaborations and debuts. The Who will kick off a batch of North American tour dates later this year on Sept. 1.
