Gov’t Mule have offered a couple of guest-filled shows in the past several days, including last night’s gig that featured members of Railroad Earth, along with a performance cut short by inclement weather.
The recent collaborations started with members of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, who opened up for Mule in Boston on Thursday. For their set, Denson and company welcomed Mule frontman Warren Haynes for “Time to Pray,” a cut from KDTU’s recent studio album, Gnomes and Badgers. Denson later returned the favor by joining the headlining band during their first set for “Mule” and “Sad & Deep As You,” while KDTU guitarist DJ Williams and drummer Zaj Najor got in on the collaborative action in set two with a cover of the Allman Brothers Band classic “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.”
After a Friday-night set in New Jersey that was cut short because of storms in the area, Mule continued their weekend on Saturday at Ohio’s Smoky Run Music Festival. During their set, Mule welcomed out members of fellow headliners Railroad Earth—violinist Tim Carbone, mandolinist John Skehan and keyboardist Matt Slocum. Carbone and Skehan emerged for “Patchwork Quilt” before Slocum joined the collective for the Allman Brothers’ “Mountain Jam.” Railroad Earth’s history with Gov’t Mule includes Haynes’ 2015 solo studio album, Ashes & Dust, on which RRE played and subsequently toured with Haynes on the supporting tour.
Check out Mule’s recent setlists below as they appear in our Box Scores section, along with some fan-shot video of the Haynes-KDTU collaboration. The band continues their summer schedule July 3 in Asheville, NC.
