Dogfish Head Brewery has announced an exclusive Record Store Day release, enlisting Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux to curate a 10-inch vinyl.
Sage and Spirit will be a “soundtrack to a summer day” and feature Grateful Dead favorites like “Sugar Magnolia,” “Eyes Of The World,” “Lost Sailor,” “Saint Of Circumstance,” “High Time,” “Unbroken Chain,” “If I Had The World To Give” and, of course, “Sage and Spirit.”
According to press release, the LP will also include live cuts of “Jack Straw” and “Brown-Eyed Women” from the Dead’s famed Europe ’72 run.
“Choosing the songs for ‘Sage & Spirit’ really didn’t take long, but that’s not to say I didn’t put a lot of work into it. My directive was, ‘You’re sitting on the porch. It’s a summer day. You’re drinking a Dogfish Head American Beauty and listening to the Dead,’ and immediately I thought, ‘I got it,’” Lemieux said.
This announcement comes in the wake of the brewery’s revival of American Beauty, their Grateful-Dead inspired ale containing “succulent wildflower honey” and “toasty, sweet notes” at 6.5% ABV.
Adds Dogfish Head founder & CEO Sam Calagione, “The enjoyment of a beautiful beer alongside an amazing album is an exponentially awesome experience, and we at Dogfish, take every opportunity we can get to weave together the art of brewing and our love of music. We’ve always been inspired by the Grateful Dead’s creativity, collaborative nature and most of all music, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with them again for the re-release of American Beauty and our Record Store Day release.”

February 28, 2019 at 1:24 amWell little bryan let me explain. In years past they have released previously unavailable (on vinyl) material so hence the dissapointment. Last year’s Black Friday, for instance, saw the release of the longest ever Playin’ from 1974 and Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band’s 1987 live release. And Phish Slip Stitch and Pass from Hamburg 1997. Not a bad day there. It’s not like there is a shortage of available material. They are having nine bands at a local store here in Pensacola (The Music Box) should be cool. And there are some non -Dead or jambands releases that aren’t bad. I think it was last spring’s RSD they released Panic’s Light Fuse Get Away from Athens 98. That is a hell of a boxset.

February 27, 2019 at 5:40 pmAwwww I guess I really hit a nerve withe the “get off my yard” crowd. Lol. Seriously this band owes you NOTHING. Beyond that, come on, if they are going to release something that isn’t already out there do you think they are going to do it as part of RSD? Really, get a grip, maybe get out of your mom’s basement and get a little fresh air. Sad, pathetic little fools.

February 27, 2019 at 11:58 amHas it occurred to any of your mouth-breathing morons that you don’t have to purchase this?? There is no obligation on your part to buy it, nobody is forcing you to shell out your money. So, hey, take your stupid complaints and piss off.

February 27, 2019 at 12:17 pmHas to occurred to you to spell your name correctly? Glad you can take part of your disability or workers comp hand out to buy another rehash of songs but the rest of us were hoping for something better…

February 26, 2019 at 6:23 pmApparently, the Dead haven’t made enough money…I’m still waiting for the release of the “Shart Sessions” where Jerry literally goes off in his pants! Move over Coltrane!

February 26, 2019 at 6:18 pmBut the ale is very good. As are most Dogfish Heads other than seasalt or blood orange. 60 minute IPA is great and you can get it down here in Florida.

February 26, 2019 at 6:16 pmDon’t really see the point in this record. Yet another compilation yay. Wish they would release Aoxomoxoa on picture disc or some JGB concerts on vinyl. The 1990 live album would be a great start. Or a record of the songs that never made the last record that wasn’t (Lazy River Road, Corrina, Days Between, etc.)

February 27, 2019 at 10:48 amDon’t forget “Some Many Roads”. That album could have been a masterpiece with these 4 songs alone. Furthur did a mind blowing rendition of “Days Between” on 11-10-11 at MSG that everyone should obtain. The entire show was epic.
The Beer might be good but another shuffling of studio songs, why? And no one wants to get up every 20 minutes and change the record anymore, especially on a drunken summer afternoon!
