An extraordinary collection of artists will gather a week from tomorrow to honor the late, great “Saxophone Colossus” Sonny Rollins. This free show will take place on September 19 from 1-3 PM at The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City, which is located on 1047 Amsterdam Avenue at 112th Street. Saxophone Colossus: A Celebration of the Life and Music of Sonny Rollins is being presented by the Jazz Foundation of America in partnership with the family of Sonny Rollins.

Rollins who passed away on May 25 at the age of 95 was an innovator as a songwriter, performer and band leader. After working with Miles Davis, Bud Powell, Max Roach and Clifford Brown, his 1956 album Saxophone Colossus established him as the leading tenor saxophone players of his era. Rollins is also recognized as one of the all-time greatest jazz improvisers. He was a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, a Kennedy Center honoree and a recipient of the National Medal of the Arts.
