Ryan Adams sat in with his old friend Jesse Malin at New York’s Bowery Ballroom last night. The singer/songwriter, who has spent more time back in New York in recent months after living in Los Angeles for the past few years, produced Malin’s full-length solo debut The Fine Art of Self Destruction in 2002.

A third of the way through last night’s set, Adams emerged, wearing a Motörhead t-shirt in memory of Lemmy Kilmister, to play that album’s title track. Watch a video of that performance above. Adams then remained onstage for three other The Fine Art of Self Destruction numbers, “Downliner,” “High Lonesome” and “Wendy.”

The evening also served as a reunion of sorts for Adams and his former Cardinals bassist Catherine Popper, who is a member of Malin’s current touring outfit. Popper played with Adams in the original Cardinals in 2005 and 2006. After parting ways with the group, she joined Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Puss n Boots and Jack White’s female band.
