Tedeschi Trucks Band picked up their third week of New York appearances by stopping by The Howard Stern Show before taking the stage at The Beacon for night eight of ten. The current residency, which now precedes the release of their six-studio set, Future Soul, on Friday, March 25, saw the ensuing Wednesday night revival of their guest list: Luther Dickinson, Cody Dickinson, and North Mississippi Allstars contributor Joey Williams.

Prior to their return to The Beacon, the band made a pitstop for songs and conversation with the Big Apple host, Sterns. In an interview clip, he brings up Trucks playing Jerry Garcia’s custom-built Tiger axe, which recently sold at auction for over $11 million, and asks him what he makes of these “old guitars.” Quipping, “Musicians can’t afford them. That’s for sure. I’m glad they let us play it.” [Laughs.]
Stern also presses Trucks for his connection to the instrument’s new owner, to which he says, “I’ve known him for a little while. I’ve borrowed some guitars from him. I was actually trying to buy John Coltrane’s horn for about 1/100th of that price. But I got blown out of the room pretty early.”
When asked about the axe’s capacity, Trucks responded, “It’s super unique, it weighs about 14 pounds, which is about twice what my guitar weighs. But super articulate. It has a unique sound. It was very Jerry Garcia-sounding, like you play it, you know it was his.”
Tedeschi goes on to cite the use of metal on the guitar’s neck, which makes it hard to play. “It was a very 1980s instrument,” Trucks adds, before digging into the frequency of the wood and its impact on tone. In addition to a pertinent back-and-forth on the historic moment, the band unleashed a three-song set, comprising the title track “Future Soul” and a Sly & The Family Stone medley, “You Can Make It If You Try” > “Everyday People.”
Last night, they continued their Big Apple commitment by returning to The Beacon, welcoming guest assistance from the Luther brothers during a mid-frame rendition of Derek and the Dominos’ “Anyday.” During the evening encore, covers of James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain” and “Get What You Deserve” were accentuated by the addition of Williams, who sat in for mainstay Isaac Eady.
Tomorrow night, Friday, March 27, Tedeschi Trucks Band will deliver their ninth Beacon concert ahead of Saturday’s finale. These concerts are sold out.
