Last night, Umphrey’s McGee celebrated New Year’s Eve at St. Louis’ Pageant Theatre—the group’s first new year’s performance outside of the Chicago area. The show kicked off with “Jazz Odyssey,” the first of three instrumentals that began each of the evening’s sets, before moving into the Death By Stereo rocker “Domino Theory.” In the first set, the band relied heavily on improv, with a highlight section taking place during the combination of “The Linear” into “The Floor.” Following tradition, Mad Dog’s Filthy Little Secret Horns and special guest Jeff Coffin joined the band for much of the second and third sets, including a debut cover of Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4” and a rare cover of The Band/The Who’s “Don’t Do It” (a song that Umphrey’s debuted to open their third set on New Year’s Eve 2004). To ring in the New Year, the group performed the obligatory “Auld Lang Syne” before dropping into another debut cover in David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance.” Another highlight segment of improv took place in the third set when the group infused a lyrical “Jimmy Stewart” into “JaJunk.” For the encore, the band played new unreleased song “Puppet Strings” before closing out the night with a fitting cover of Paul Simon’s “Late In The Evening.”
