For thirteen of the past fourteen years, Blues Traveler has celebrated Independence Day at Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks (the group’s 1999 show was cancelled as John Popper underwent angioplasty.) In addition to Blues Traveler, this year’s celebration featured sets by the Wood Brothers and blues prodigy Jonny Lang. Lang also appeared with Blues Traveler on ‘Make My Way.’ Lang and Popper have collaborated in numerous settings over the years, some more notable than others. In addition to co-writing ‘How About Now’ for Popper’s first solo CD, Zygote, the longtime friends have the dubious distinction of appearing together on Hanson’s sophomore album, This Time Around. Tuesday’s performance marked the first time Blues Traveler has offered a two set show since releasing its latest album, _ Bastardos_, in 2005. Looking ahead, Blues Traveler has confirmed a handful of fall dates which find the quintet playing theaters throughout the country. Popper will release his first studio album with the John Popper Project featuring DJ Logic on Relix Records this fall.
