Relix 40 Celebration

When founding Publisher Les Kippel and charter Editor Jerry Moore put their first issue to bed in the fall of 1974, few would have guessed that Dead Relix, as the magazine was originally known, would eventually outlive Jerry Garcia, let alone grow into the second longest-running rock music magazine in, America. But during the past 40 years, Relix has continued to change and adapt with countless musical trends—overcoming the numerous speed bumps that any small, family company faces—and has grown into an award-winning, full-color, glossy magazine that embraces a wide breadth of music while still keeping an eye firmly planted on the Grateful Dead.

As part of our 40th anniversary celebration, this month we are proud to celebrate Relix’s history with a collection of features, essays, photo galleries and personal reflections that not only tell the magazine’s story but also tie together the many styles that have remained core to us during the past four decades. In addition to essays on genre architects like Phish, Wilco and, of course, the Dead, we salute often overlooked jamband heroes Aquarium Rescue Unit, offer an oral history of the livetronica music scene, tell the true story of the lost Betty Boards, catch up with longtime Relix cohort Jorma Kaukonen and reminisce about festivals ranging from Bonnaroo to Berkfest. We are also proud to look back on Relix’s own long, strange trip through a series of personal statements from some of the magazine’s longest-standing contributors. Please join us as we turn the wheel back just a little bit—even as we keep our eyes set on the horizon—while we celebrate 40 years of music for the mind.
