Brownout and Yojimbo!
Any big plans in the works for 2013?
A lot of touring. Mike Dillon Band has shows opening for Umphrey’s McGee, Fishbone and Marco Benevento. Gonna do a drum record with one my favorite drummers. Top secret. 🙂
2013 marks the 40th year of Relix Magazine. Do you remember the first time you read Relix? Is there an article that stands out for you?
I remember I was house sitting for Matt Chamberlain when he was playing with the New Bohemians. They were opening for the Dead at some Giants Stadium on the east coast. I went to look for a review of the show at the book store in Dallas. It was 1988 or 89. Someone said check out Relix. At that time I had no idea what the jam scene was. My friends who went to see punk rock shows would also go see the Grateful Dead. People were way more open minded. The only close minded people were the skinheads. Camper Van Beethoven had a great song called “Take the Skinheads Bowling”.

What will you remember most about 2012?
It’s been a super packed year, but I suppose the second biggest highlight would have to be The Complete Last Waltz. On Thanksgiving weekend, I had the honor of being musical director for a concert at the Warfield in San Francisco, performing The Band’s entire Last Waltz concert along with Joe Russo, Marco Benevento, Scott Metzger, Dave Dreiwitz, Rob Burger, Josh Kaufman, Alecia Chakour, Stuart Bogie and the Antibalas horns, Scott McMicken and Eric Slick from Dr. Dog, Cass McCombs, Blake Hazard, Eric D. Johnson from the Fruit Bats, Nels Cline, Andy Cabic from Vetiver, Binky Griptite, George Lewis Jr., Trixie Whitley, and the list goes on and on. It was a collection of some of my favorite musicians, people I’ve played with in the past and were meeting for the first time. There were so many moving parts and so much preparation, but the night of the show, the music completely took over and that giant cast of 30 or so musicians shared something so moving and inspiring. It exceeded my wildest expectations. I think I’ll always draw from that night for inspiration.
What album or albums have you listened to most this past year?
I’m a creature of habit, so probably the Nashville Skyline cassette that lives semi permanently in the tape player of my van. I was really into the new Tame Impala record Lonerism, too. Kind of opposite albums in a lot of ways. Both awesome.
What was your favorite show or tour in 2012?
I had a great time doing a run of shows with The Fruit Bats. The first night at Schuba’s in Chicago and then at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn were two of the most satisfying performances in our history as a band, and it was awesome meeting those guys. I’m definitely expecting do to more with them!
What emerging band should readers watch out for in 2013?
Hannah Cohen. Her debut album is gorgeous and her voice and phrasing are unique and beautiful. I wish I could sing like her.
Any big plans in the works for 2013?
Of course! The new Yellowbirds album Songs From The Vanished Frontier comes out next summer. I’m looking forward to touring more extensively than we have in the past, playing some festivals, and generally doing it up. I’ve also been working on a record with Alecia Chakour that I’m super excited about and can’t wait to share.
2013 marks the 40th year of Relix Magazine. Do you remember the first time you read Relix? Is there an article that stands out for you?
Wow, congrats! I remember seeing Dr. Dog on the cover several years ago, just before Fate came out. They weren’t too well known yet, and I was surprised and glad to see them on the cover of a magazine.
