PAPA MALI (7 WALKERS)

What will you remember most about 2011?

I finally moved back home to New Orleans and of course 2011 was a great year for 7 Walkers, thanks to Bill Kreutzmann, Matt Hubbard, George Porter Jr, Robert Hunter, Kirk Joseph, Reed Mathis, Ramon Juma (tour manager), BenJammin (lighting director) Red Light Management, APA (agency), Madison House Publicity and most importantly – all the fans that bought the record and came out for the shows! Thanks everybody!

What album or albums received the most play?

I have a huge vinyl collection, so much of what I play around the house is older music – classic rock, old school funk, roots country and blues, southern swamp and soul mixed with lots of 60s pop and movie soundtracks, 70s reggae and dub and early jazz. But two recent (2011) releases that have been getting played regularly: Big Chief Monk Boudreaux Won’t Bow Down and Rebirth Brass Band The Rebirth of New Orleans.

What was your favorite show or tour in 2011?

My favorite shows of 2011: (in no particular order):
Bootsy Collins at Tipitina’s
Galactic at Tipitina’s (Lundi Gras)
Lettuce – both New Orleans shows in 2011 (during Jazzfest at Contemporary Arts Center and at Tipitina’s, Sept 25th).
Stanton Moore Trio w/Anders Osborne at Blue Nile, New Orleans (Jazzfest late night)
My favorite 7 Walkers shows were:
The Temple (New Orleans), w/ special guest Steve Kimock and The Dirty Dozen Brass (May 7),
Tipitina’s w/ special guests The Dirty Dozen Brass, Big Sam and Honey Island Swamp Band (Oct 18)
Great American Music Hall with special guests Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Sikiru Adepoju and Maria Muldaur, San Francisco (Oct 30-31).

What emerging band should readers watch out for in 2012?

Everyone needs to check out Honey Island Swamp Band! Great songs, great vocals. And live, they can really rock your socks off – gritty and funky one minute, chill and down home Americana the next. I hate to make comparisons, so take this as more of a reference point: If The Band or Little Feat had grown up in the deep south…kinda, sorta…but still unique and fresh with something original to offer.

What’s your New Year’s resolution for 2012?

Give more, take less. Live in the moment without getting hung up in the past. Always believe that today is the day that dreams come true (they have, they will, they do). Don’t sell out. Never fade away. Love unconditionally.
