As we near the close of our New Years reports (stay tuned) we cast our sights on The Fillmore in Denver where Yonder Mountain String Band played three nights to a hometown crowd. The first night featured an opening set from Keller Williams at the close of his performance, Williams and the host group, who are longtime tourmates (Big Summer Classic, Acoustic Planet), collaborated on a version of Williams Portapotty that closed out his set and segued into the first Yonder set. Williams also appeared at the beginning of set two for a stretch that included Death Trip, Dixie Chicken and Up On The Hill Where They Do The Boogie. Over the next two nights Yonder added long-time friend and oft-auxiliary member Darol Anger on fiddle. In addition, the band often expanded to a sextet as the Flecktones Futureman appeared on percussion and drums and the 30th and 31st. The latter show was a three set affair that featured an extended segued section during the first set (without Futureman) that included Fastball, Sometimes I’ve Won, On The Run, I’d Like Off, Too Late Now and Finally Saw The Light. The third set nicely showcased the bands affinities as it began with a cover of the Faces Ooh La La and closed out with the groups take on John Hartfords Steam Powered Aereoplane.
