Much like its televised counterpart, the Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown soundtrack isn’t as revered as the preceding Christmas and Halloween specials.
But Valentine has its own charms. And they’re there for the listening on the new 50th-anniversary iteration outfitted with a remaster and eight bonus tracks to add sparkle and heft to Vince Guaraldi’s Peantus ’75 offering.
The best of the bonus bunch is the bluesy “Last Call for Love,” which at six minutes is the longest track on an album loaded with 30 cuts, many of which are but seconds long but tend to clock in at the 50-second to two-minute range.
Backed by electric bassist Seward McCain and drummer Vince Lateano, Guaraldi plays acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes, making for a different sound in the composer’s discography.
“Linus and Lucy” and its “Reprise” are virtually unrecognizable; 13 instances of “Heartburn Waltz” give the LP the feeling of a suite; and nods to Beethoven, Chopin and Bach are included for the Schroeder lovers in the bunch.
