Renée Fleming and Béla Fleck recently collaborated on a new studio record. The Fiddle and the Drum honors Appalachian bluegrass and folk music with guests such as Dolly Parton, Sierra Hull, Vince Gill, Jerry Douglas, Aoife O’Donovan, and Sarah Jarosz.
Fleming and Fleck debuted the material live on May 16 at the Grand Ole Opry and will next explore these songs on December 3 at Carnegie Hall.
The two of them pulled together a stellar cast of musicians to perform some of these tunes for the NPR Music Tiny Desk series. The personnel also includes Michael Cleveland (fiddle) Sierra Hull (mandolin), Mark Schatz (bass) and Jake Stargel (guitar). The setlist features “In The Pines,” “He’s Gone Away / Storms Are On The Ocean” and “Blackest Crow.”
