The latest studio album from Grace Potter will be released on August 21. Thirty Tigers will issue Trespasser, which is sequel, of sorts, to Potter’s 2023 album Mother Road. In conjunction with that record, Potter told Relix, ” I love the idea of driving, but it’s only romantic for the first hundred miles. It gets really weird right away when you’re by yourself and you’re traveling by choice down these roads alone and knowing that every turn you take is taking you farther and farther away from one version of you and closer and closer to the next version of you.”
This narrative seemingly continues on Trespasser, which she recorded in various locales across the country. Potter started in California with Benmont Tench (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers), made her way to Nashville to reconvene with Mother Road session players Nick Bockrath (Cage the Elephant), Tim Deaux (Kings of Leon), and Matt Musty (Train), then finished in Vermont with four members of her live band: guitarists Indya Bratton and Ricky Dover Jr, bassist Kurtis Keber and drummer Jordan West). Potter’s husband and steady musical collaborator Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Weezer, Slash) produced the record.
Potter has just released “Run Baby Run,” her second single from the album. She explains, “‘Run Baby Run’ came from a moment where I had to have a serious conversation, and my instinct was to run,” says Potter. “I was asking myself, ‘Why do I always want to run away when things get heavy?’, and it turned into a love song about a woman escaping an abusive relationship.”
Meanwhile, Potter has also recorded two songs for the Salt Lick Sessions’ new Songs of U.S. series. The goal of this video series is to reflect upon the American songbook in conjunction with the country’s 250 birthday. To this end, Potter has interpreted Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” and Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy.” The Guthrie cover has just been released, with the Gnarls Barkley tune to follow tomorrow. Potter also has been interviewed for the project.
Grace Potter will next perform at Salt Lake City’s Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre on Tuesday.
