Over the weekend, Billy Strings unleashed a hometown hootenanny. The musician, known for his fast-picking and impulsive graze across a multitude of genres and styles, added a capstone to his Nashville weekend on Sunday night, following a guest-heavy rotation during the preceding concerts. Last night’s invitation brought the group’s fanbase to a second location, the Ryman Auditorium, after warm-ups at the Bridgestone Arena, for an all-originals delivery–a rare event for this group.

For last night’s locational and tour finale, the ensemble stacked their two-set delivery with pieces from their personal repertoire, an oddity for the band, which typically integrates nods to the greats and other influences throughout their live performances. Before the audience could clock the trend, Strings, Billy Failing, Alex Hargreaves, Royal Masat, and Jarrod Walker flexed their joint capacity as musicians on “The Fire On My Tongue” into “Bronzeback.”

The coupled entry opened space for “Be Your Man.” For the group’s next move, they kept up their regard for fused pairings with “Everything’s The Same,” which unfolded into “Cabin Song.” Ultimately, Billy went solo next, performing “Catch and Release,” before bringing out Failing for their concert signature, “Dos Banjos.” “Hellbender” brought the band back together as they continued to slip through Renewal numbers, such as “Heartbeat of America.”

The Highway Prayers feature “Gone A Long Time” came before a sequence that ran from “Running the Route” to “Hollow Heart,” without pause. Returning from the set break, Strings picked up his Masterton ML-1: Missing Link Béla Fleck Baritone Banjo to rev up “Leadfoot.” After finishing the aforementioned number, the group began a three-piece suite composed of “Fire Line,” “Thirst Mutilator,” and “Running.”

The final section of the concert’s second half brought continued treatments of originals, “Watch It Fall,” “Leaders,” “Doin’ Things Right,” and “The Beginning of the End.” For their final Nashville delivery, the five-piece performed an encore that featured a single entry: “Hide and Seek.”

Next, Strings will participate in the Opry Celebrates: O Brother, Where Art Thou? on Feb. 28 at the Opry House, before the onset of Spring Tour in St. Augustine, Fla., on April 2. For more information, visit www.billystrings.com/#tour
