The opening night of Goosemas XII took place last evening at the Amica Mutual Pavilion (aka the AMP) in Providence, RI. As with prior installments of the annual event, the performance was built around a theme. In this instance it was “Barnaby Glimpse’s Show Upon Time: A Phantom Menagerie” which was set in 1734. The band members were dressed in period costumes and were joined on stage by Stuart Bogie on woodwinds as well as animal puppets on stilts during various moments of the show.

The first set featured songs that shared lyrics with a wildlife subject matter. Goose originals “Creatures,” “Atlas Dogs,” “Red Bird” and “Animal” all served this cause. In addition, the group debuted a few covers, from the opening “Dramophone” by Caravan Palace, on through The Shouting Matches’ “Bear” and Pink Floyd’s “Pigs (Three Different Ones).”
The group returned for set two, which evoked the idea of a dark colonial carnival. The music began with a powerful take on the quartet’s own “So Ready.” Goose then built on that momentum during a 20-minute of “Arrow,” which segued into the band’s first-ever take on Radiohead’s “Burn the Witch.” The two songs that followed to closed out the frame, each exceeded 20 minutes as well, with “Madhuvan” charging into “Dripfield.”

The encore opened with the band’s original “Jed Stone.” followed by Gregory Alan Isakov’s “Master & A Hound.” Finally, Rick Mitarotonda and Peter Anspach delivered a duo debut version of Neil Young’s “Sugar Mountain.”
