Singer-songwriter Allie Goertz has shared her interpretation of Nine Inch Nails covers. The collection of reimagined material serves as the artist’s first album in eight years. Dubbed Peeled Back, the title alludes to her approach to stripping down NIN music, fraying from the band’s industrial rock lean, and turning it into something comparable to Cat Powers’ acoustic pop-folk slant to borrowed material.

Using the lens of a female-driven narrative, Peeled Back dabbles in themes of heartbreak and joy. It counters those feelings with opposing forces, torture and tragic comedy while leaving room for desired healing through an influx of loss and recovery. Entirely funded by a Kickstarter campaign and the support of her listeners, donations to make the set were reached within 6 hours, implying her fan’s embrace of the project.

With finances secured, Goertz took her ambitious covers to the studio, recording in California and Louisiana while preserving a sense of authenticity that bubbled up on location. In total, Peeled Back permeates with 15 adaptations to NIN songs, including fan favorites and deeper cuts from The Downward Spiral, The Fragile, With Teeth, and other lauded albums with soft and sweet takes, all maintaining NIN known intensity.
