Today, Friday, May 24, Widespread Panic continued its current trend of trickling out new music, delivering its fifth new single to drop this calendar year. “Cosmic Confidante” is the latest edition to the band’s canon of original music and arrived after “Life As a Tree,” “Tackle Box Hero,” “We Walk Each Other Home,” and “Little by Little.” The ensemble’s return to the studio represents their first original recordings from said setting in nine years. Their current rollout of deliverables showcases durational intentionality fused with the gradual percolation of first-time material.
“Cosmic Confidante” lifts off with assuaging instruments—a 90s-tinged guitar start that engulfs the first 20 seconds. Strums give way to the lyrics carried by John Bell, complemented by drummer Duane Trucks’ consistent and supportive backbeat. The overall composition is relatively tame, sans big builds; it’s easy listening, an ideal sonic partner for summer camping trips, Sunday grill sessions, or outdoor dinner parties with like-minded music fans, where a conversational pivot is intent to provoke whispers of “Hey, have you heard new music from Widespread Panic?”
Notably, Widespread Panic’s latest single hit streaming sites on the same day as the start of their two-night concert series in Memphis, Tenn., where they are scheduled to perform at Radians Amphitheater at Memphis Botanic Garden May 24 and 25. Tonight’s concert is billed to include special guest Margo Price, with Paul Cauthen picking up the position the following night, respectively. Beyond their independent tour stops, the band will act as openers during Rolling Stone’s Denver tour stop, which will occur at Empower Field at Mile High. Tickets remain on sale.
