On Thursday night, the Dave Matthews Band arrived at the Palladium in Cologne, Germany, adding another date and location to their current European spring tour. While on stage, the band, comprised of Tim Reynolds, Jeff Coffin, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard, Rashwan Ross, Buddy Strong, and, of course, the group’s namesake, bestowed attendees with the first “Lie in Our Graves” reprise, performed separately from its main number, since 2019.
DMB’s Cologne stand started with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Fool in the Rain,” a standard during their live shows since 2022. They then turned toward their original catalog and unleashed “Old Dirt Hill (Bring That Beat Back)” and “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin),” adding paired classics, “Dancing Nancies” with “Warehouse” before ensuing pulls off 2023’s Walk Around the Moon LP. After “Monsters,” Matthews delivered the chorus of “Gravedigger” solo as an introduction prior to Beauford’s onset.
For their next song, the band scrapped the depths of their ‘90s archive, presenting fan favorite “Lay Your Lover Down” before bringing the frame up to date with another 2023 release, “All You Wanted Was Tomorrow.” The pattern continued, bouncing from old to new and exhibiting layers of their three-decade-long history. For the final song of their mainframe, DMB treated folks to their heavily played and beloved “Ants Marching.”
The encore opened on “Something to Tell My Baby” before the arrival of the night’s most talked about moment and Matthews’ bandmates. Whereas the “Lie in Our Graves” reprise typically comes after the main song’s instrumentals and the minimal lyrics referencing its title, DMB only offered a reprise. This move was last done in 2019, ending a significant gap in live deliveries.
According to the DMBAlmanac, setlists past show the rareness of the moment, which first occurred on August 22, 2007, and sporadically reappeared over the next decade, including less than a month after the initial debut, again in 2011, prior to the April 3, 2019’s delivery, which also landed during the band’s European tour, only that time, in Italy.
