Today, Scott Hansen aka Tycho, re-emerged with a fresh sonic offering titled “Time to Run.” Released via Ninja Tune and Mom+Pop, the song marks Tycho’s first original composition in three years, excluding his noteworthy collaboration with Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard.
On the track, which features guitarist Zak Brown and drummer Kaelin Ellis, Tycho embraces a new rhythmic direction while retaining his signature atmospheric synthwork, taking listeners on a more buoyant journey than his trademark sound. Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear’s mixing furthers the allure of the latest effort with his effervescent inclinations.
In a statement, Tycho reflected on his connection between music and meditation–a constant throughout his life–which he pulled from in the song. He said, “As a competitive runner throughout my early life, I would play back loops of songs in my head to cope with the stress of races, focusing on rhythmic elements to help pace myself and stay calm. There is a unique form of clarity that I have found through the meditative practice of running, it is a fundamentally human experience, and when I feel the deepest connection between the mind, body, and nature. ‘Time To Run’ is my attempt to translate these ideas into music. My goal was to approach the composition from a new angle and let the rhythmic elements take the lead. I cast the melodic elements that have come to define the Tycho sound in a new light by juxtaposing them against a new foundation that takes cues from funk music.”
The track was released with an accompanying music video directed by Patrick Elmore, which intertwines the song’s overarching theme of running with nostalgic energy. In the video showcases the cheers of spectators, guidance from coaches, and watchful eyes of officials at the starting line, a race commences, the runners vanish into the encompassing woods. Intense pressure and physical strain experienced during such moments, conveying a desire to keep running relentlessly, never glancing back, however the music seems to carry them. Ultimately, the storyline urges viewers to liberate themselves from the burdens imposed by others, inspiring serenity and fulfillment which is symbolized by the subject diving into a cool natural pool of water.
Coinciding with the release, Tycho’s Golden States festival is set to take place on Saturday, July 15, in Napa., Calif.T he event will feature Tycho as the headliner, accompanied by stellar performances from Channel Tres, Panda Bear & Sonic Boom, Buscabulla, Washed Out (DJ Set), Brijean, and Kaelin Ellis.
