Roger Daltrey has offered some more insight into The Who’s recent split with longtime touring drummer Zak Starkey as well as accounts that they have already reunited for some rehearsals.

In an interview with Life Minute TV, the singer, who is currently on a solo tour, told Joann Butler, “It’s never been the same since Keith [Moon] died. I can’t pretend it has. We were firing on all cylinders. We could throw anything out there and make something of it. That kind of disappeared when Keith died.”

He then went on to discuss the band’s relationship with Starkey, who worked with the acclaimed outfit from 1996-2025. Before then, Faces drummer Kenney Jones sat behind the kit from 1978–1983 as well as in 1985 and 1988 while Simon Phillips held that role during a reunion run in 1989. Scott Devours filled in on drums after Starkey parted ways with the group before in their final US tour last year.  

“We tried Kenny Jones, who is a great drummer, but a straight drummer just does not work with The Who,” Daltrey said in the interview. “It just does not work. But Zak Starkey, he’s not Keith Moon, but he comes very close.”

According to reports, Daltrey mentioned on stage at Las Vegas’ Encore Theater that The Who have been rehearsing with Starkey once again

He went on to say of the possible regrouping, “We love Zak. We do love Zak. Sometimes the road doesn’t love Zak. It gets on top of him, so it becomes difficult, but we love him. We did the rehearsal to see if we can possibly do shows next year, still hit the notes, still get the drive. Who music demands an incredible amount of drive, and without that, it would be like Herman’s Hermits without Herman.”

Daltrey’s A Great Night Out Tour continued at Santa Rosa, CA’s Luther Burbank Center for the Arts this evening.
