Mike Gordon’s current tour in support of his new solo album Flying Games rolled into New York’s Webster Hall on Saturday, the night before Father’s Day. During the bassist’s encore, he welcomed his daughter Tessa Gordon for a pair of tunes. After discussing Phish’s tradition of inviting out their children on Father’s Day, Gordon brought Tessa out to sing on Orgone’s “Who Knows Who” and BabyJake and Bipolar Sunshine’s “Funny Thing About Love.” (The Gordons recently played the latter song with Little Stranger at Burlington, VT’s Nectar’s.) For the covers, Gordon and his band were joined by a horn section consisting of area players Mike Williams, Eric Biondo and Lynn Ligammari. Gordon and his solo band then closed the night with their take on Phish’s “Carini,” which they debuted on Thursday.
Earlier in the night, Gordon also surprised fans by covering Trey Anastasio’s “A Wave of Hope” for the first time. The track appears on the guitarist’s 2020 album Lonely Trip, though Phish has played it since 2021. Keyboardist Rachel Eckroth, who is subbing for Robert Walters while he is on tour with Roger Waters, also got to play her song “Circling,” which Gordon’s group is playing this run, live in front of a hometown audience.
Gordon will appear at Covington, KY’s Madison Theater tomorrow.
